The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will decide a lot for the cast of Twilight. The story is darker and more intense. There is more action and less moody pining and longing gazes. Edward and Bella are together once again, but Jacob is not a serious rival for Bella’s affections. Of course, if you’ve read the books you already know how everything turns out and, well, being that this is a Hollywood film, you can probably guess the outcome even if you haven’t read the books. With all of that said though, the series is drawing to a close with only one – or possibly two depending on whether or not the rumors of the final book, Breaking Dawn, being split into two movies – movie remaining. So what does that mean for the actors who have come to embody the characters we love so dearly? Well, that depends.

Peter Facinelli who plays Doctor Carlisle Cullen in the series will likely do just fine. He might never find the immense fan base this role has garnered him again and the Twilight kids likely won’t stick around after the vampire make up is gone, but his career will be fine. His work as Doctor Fitch Cooper on Showtime’s Nurse Jackie has ensured he isn’t typecast as the patriarch of Twilight’s undead Cullen family. Gil Birmingham who plays Billy Black – Jacob Black’s seldom seen father – is barely in the movie enough to have the chance to be typecast, and Billy Burke, who plays Bella’s father, Charlie Swan, has more than enough credits on his resume to ensure a long lasting career. And we all know Anna Kendrick, who plays Bella’s friend Jessica, has a lucrative career ahead of her as the first – and possibly only – Twilight cast member to be nominated for an Academy Award.

What is a little less certain is the fate of our lead characters; Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. Kristen Stewart has been an indie princess long before Twilight came around and with the decisions she is making post Twilight has a good chance of ensuring she retains that title. Along with Twilight: New Moon co-star, Dakota Fanning (who is going to have a hugely successful career Twilight or not) received rave reviews for her performance in The Runaways where she starred as Joan Jett. The problem with Stewart is she occasionally doesn’t seem to take Twilight seriously, phoning in her performance and seeming somewhat pained and uncomfortable. Sure, that may be her gimmick as it seems to be present in most of her performances but if she hopes to have a successful career with more Twilight sized success in her future, she needs to play a role a little different than all the roles she’s done so far.

This tendency to play the same role over and over again is something that may also come to haunt Robert Pattinson. The dark and brooding characters seem to come naturally too him, possibly because he is fairly dark and brooding himself, but if he wants a career that isn’t over with the conclusion of the Twilight series, he needs to pull something new and surprising out of his hat. He has the world watching and that is a lot of pressure, but with Remember Me, Pattinson showed he has the acting chops if he is more willing to take risks. In the Twilight series thus far, he has been unimpressive, seemingly content to look pretty. He has the chance with Eclipse to show us range and it is my hope that he does. I’m rooting for this kid. I could see him having a career similar to that of Johnny Depp or Heath Ledger if he is willing to put in the effort and choose his roles wisely. Pattinson needs his Monster’s Ball or his Edward Scissorhands – not another rehash of the same old thing.

Taylor Lautner has the most uncertain future of the Twilight game and it is solely because of how New Moon was handled. Taylor was promoted as a pretty smile and rock hard abs and that just isn’t enough to launch a career on. His performance in New Moon left a lot to be desired and one can only hope he chose to work on his acting skills as much as he worked on his body for Eclipse. This movie will tell us a lot about where Lautner’s future career will lead. You can only get so far on your looks. Ask Ashton Kutcher and Sean William Scott. He may surprise us all yet, but my money’s on Pattinson and Stewart for long term success if they play their cards right.

It is fairly certain that no one will ever know exactly what led to the abrupt recasting of Victoria, played by Rachelle Lefevre in Twilight and New Moon, just prior to the filming of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. There was so much back and forth between Summit, the studio that produces The Twilight series, and the actress herself that it is hard to be sure where the truth lies. One thing is clear, however. Twilight fans were not at all pleased that one of the cast members from the movie they loved so dearly was out of the picture halfway through the series. Once the smoke cleared, Lefevre still had her supporters, but in general, everyone moved on. By the time New Moon hit the theaters, few people remembered the drama at all. Lefevre was still on the screen though, albeit briefly, but with the role of Victoria taking on more prominence in Eclipse, one has to wonder how the cast change will affect the reception of the film.

I, for one, was angry when I heard Lefevre had been given the boot and was replaced with Bryce Dallas Howard. Although I think Howard is a fine actress, I particularly liked her in The Village, it is hard to picture anyone embodying the character of Victoria better than Rachelle Lefevre. Lefevre has a sultry, sensual vibe with enough of an edge that she is completely believable as the imposing figure Victoria must become. I just can’t see Howard the same way.

Toying with something that works this late in the game is a dangerous idea. Cast changes midway through a series can take viewers out of the story. Of course, Eclipse has a few things working for it in this area. First, Victoria is seldom seem in Twilight and New Moon. She is a pivotal character to be sure and plays a large roll in pushing the drama and suspense of the film, but her screen time is fairly minimal. Had this casting change been made to a member of the Cullen family, I’m sure there would be a much greater impact.

The second, and likely most important factor in this recasting drama, is that Summit replaced Rachelle Lefevre with Bryce Dallas Howard who could at the very least pass for Lefevre’s sister if not twin. These two women look enough alike that with make up and hair, the transition should be near seamless. Considered with the scare glimpses we get of Victoria in the first two films, there shouldn’t be any significant impact on Eclipse – at least not visually. Emotionally speaking, it might be a bit of a different story.

It’s hard not to feel a little sad for Rachelle Lefevre. She had a part in one of the biggest movie franchises of the decade even though it was a small one. She stood in the background for two movies and Eclipse was her time to shine. The Victoria character plays a huge role in Eclipse – the book at least – and this was really Lefevre’s chance to be noticed. Instead, it will be Howard that will be taking the spotlight and that has to smart.

I’m giving Bryce Dallas Howard the chance she deserves. She didn’t ask to be thrown into the center of this controversy. She simply accepted a role and did the job she was hired to do. I’ll watch her as Victoria with an open mind, but I won’t be able to help wondering what kind of film Eclipse would’ve been had Rachelle Lefevre still be a part of it and I’m sure I won’t be alone in finding Victoria’s scenes somewhat bittersweet.

Is it really that hard to please a hoard of teenage girls? It’s really not – cute boys and a little drama will go a long way. Keeping their attention, on the other hand, may be a bit more difficult; just ask Zac Efron. Efron was the talk of the town and poised to be the next Leonardo Di Caprio then Robert Pattinson and his messy yet perfect hair came along and Zac was yesterday’s news. The question, of course, is whether or not Pattinson is going to suffer the same flash in the pan fate and take the Twilight Saga with him. This has to make Summit, the production company responsible for Twilight, a little nervous.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is slated for release on June 30, so when news broke that Pattinson and his rumored girlfriend, Kristen Stewart, were headed back to Vancouver with the rest of the Twilight gang for reshoots in April, Twilight fans everywhere for nervous. We’ve been hearing for months that the third installment in this mega popular franchise was going to be much darker under the direction of David Slade. Was it too dark?

The truth is, reshoots are fairly common, even this late in the game. That doesn’t mean Eclipse is going to be much darker than the two predecessors in the series though. David Slade, known most perhaps for the extremely dark 30 Days of Night, has said he wanted to bring darkness to the series, and let’s face it – the movies need it.

Until this point, the movie adaptations of the Twilight Saga have really been lacking a lot of the punch the books packed. Each movie has gotten progressively further away from the books that launched the whole Twilight phenomenon. Stephanie Meyer’s books combined love, fantasy, action and drama flawlessly and wove an entertaining and engrossing story. The movies have really lacked a lot of the dramatic tension that make the books so endearing.

Eclipse needs to up the tension and stick more closely to the book. It needs to have more than Taylor Lautner shirtless, Kristen Stewart biting her lip and looking pensive and Robert Pattinson being pretty. New Moon strayed so far from the book it was supposedly based on it was hard to recognize the similarities. New Moon, for real fans of the book, was a huge disappointment. I still bought the DVD and watched it more times than I care to admit, but I was truly hoping for more. I know I wasn’t alone in that.

I have faith in David Slade. I don’t think he will pander to the teen girls but I think he will give them enough Robert Pattinson and enough shirtless Taylor Lautner to keep them happy. And I’ll be honest, I’m almost thirty years old and one of my favorite parts of the Twilight movies is certainly looking at Mr. Pattinson. That said. I am almost thirty and am fully aware there needs to be more to a movie than cute boys. Hopefully Slade has realized this and given the movie something to keep everyone happy so Eclipse can be a better movie than New Moon.
